Body length: 8 - 16 mm

Adults in: June - August
Host plant: coniferous trees (Picea, Abies, Pinus)
Distribution: Central, East and North Europe, France

Callidium coriaceum is a rare mountainous species associated with mainly spruce in Central Europe. In N Slovak Republic the authors of this site have once observed the species flying to a dying spruce (Figure) of a large diameter. One day spent in a close proximity to the tree resulted in capturing about 12 specimens of this rare animal. Although the beetle seems to be coloured in a rather striking way it is very difficult to see it on the bark of a spruce. Moreover the beetles tend to hide in bark crevices as soon as they land. The larvae of this species feed subcortically and later they enter the sapwood where they build the pupal cells. Recently dead standing spruce trees are the preferred larval substrate. The depicted beetle was found on a dying Norway spruce (Picea abies) near Blatnica (NW Slovakia).

According to Rejzek and Rébl (1999) the preferred host of this species in Central Europe is field maple (Acer campestre). Thicker branches and trunks are usually attacked. Larvae feed subcortically and later in sapwood creating a very characteristic frass pattern filled with fine sawdust. When entering the wood the larvae never block the entrance holes (Figure). They secure the pupal cells by a wad of frass deeper in the wood. The beetles can occasionally be found on flowers but they probably gather on them during the night and stay there a substantial part of the next day, analogous to their close relative Leioderes tuerki, a typical nocturnal species. Leioderes tuerki is not active before dusk and during the night it flies around cordwood and comes to flowering plants, shrubs and trees. During the next morning it can for example be found sitting on flowering hawthorn, but it disappears before noon. Most of the beetles spend the day sitting on leaves of the host plants (Juglans regia and others in case of Leioderes tuerki).

Body length: 9 - 15 mm
Life cycle: 1 - 2 years
Adults in: May - June
Host plant: polyphagous in deciduous trees (Acer, Ulmus, Quercus)

Leioderes tuerki seems to be endemic to South Turkey, namely the Taurus mountains. It develops in Quercus and Juglans but it is likely that also other deciduous trees serve as its host. It is a crepuscular to nocturnal species. The beetles start to activate at dusk and can be observed in flight around their potential hosts. Occasionally they gather on flowering shrubs like hawthorn and stay there all over the night. In the next morning they can still be observed sitting in the flowers but completely disappear before noon. The adults were once beaten from dry branches of Juglans regia during the day.

Body length: 8 - 13 mm
Life cycle: 2 years
Adults in: May - June
Host plant: deciduous trees (Quercus, Juglans etc.)
Distribution: Turkey

The beetle in the picture was found sitting in a blossoming hawthorn (Crataegus sp., Rosaceae) near Ciftehan village (South Turkey).

Ropalopus femoratus only occurs in Europe. Locally it is quite frequent. It develops in dry thin twigs of various deciduous trees and shrubs. Very frequently in our climate it attacks dead twigs of Corylus avellana and Quercus spp. Larvae feed subcortically creating broad galleries and later they build a shallow pupal cell in the sapwood.

The holotype of the newly described species (Sama et Rejzek, 2002) was captured whilst sitting on a branch of a living shrubby Quercus species. However, as the other congeners of the species group ungaricus develop in various living Acer spp., we think it more likely that Acer might be the true host. A species of Acer does occur (although quite rarely) in the type locality. Only recently, our colleague Nicole Auvray, has collected 15 specimens of this remarkable beetle in an Acer-Quercus growth in Kastamonu (N Turkey).

Body length: 24 m
Life cycle: 2 - 3 years [?]
Specimen captured: June 22.-23., 1999
Host plant: unknown, but very likely an Acer sp.
Distribution: Turkey

The depicted beetle was collected in Buglan Gecidi pass (1640 m, 40 km NW Mus, East Turkey).
